About Jesus and Me

When I retired, I felt like a fish out of water, so I volunteered to teach 7th grade religion at my church. The Jesus and Me eBook series is the result of a classroom discussion with my students.

“If Jesus was alive today, and in your class, right here…” I leaned on a student desk in the front row, and scanned the room letting my eyes momentarily rest on each kid. “Would you want Him as a friend? Invite Him to your home, and hang out with Him?”

I thought they’d love to meet Jesus and be His friend. Who wouldn’t? He was a kid just like them AND He was God. But boy! Did they ever surprise me!

They answered with a very emphatic, resounding,

“No!”

“He was too serious.”

“He was too sad.”

“He wouldn’t be much fun,” a boy called out.

“Who wants to hang out with someone who always talks about picking up your cross?”

“But He wasn’t like that all the time,” I said.

“Oh yeah? Show us a picture of Him laughing,” a girl in the first row said.

“Or tell us a joke He said,” a boy in the back called out.

Nothing I said could change their minds. They knew He was God, but couldn’t relate to Him, because they didn’t think He was much like them.

No matter what I did for the next few weeks, that discussion kept popping into my mind. I couldn’t let it go. I thought maybe a story about Jesus and His use of exaggerated humor in His parables would convince people, especially kids, that He was a regular guy.

I talked it over with my pastor, and he thought it was a great idea, so I started researching and writing.

Two weeks later, I decided I didn’t like where the story was going.

A joke that has to be explained isn’t funny, and the more I wrote about a Jesus who joked around in His parables, the less I liked what I was writing. It was coming off as disrespectful, and that was the last thing I wanted.

I was about to give up when I realized the story didn’t have to be funny. It had to be about Jesus as a human, who laughed and cried and played just like we do.

I don’t remember why or how Angelo, Jesus’ guardian angel came into the story, but as soon as he did as the storyteller, the Jesus and Me eBook Trilogy was born.

Jesus And Me Revealed by Angelo His Guardian Angel eBook Trilogy, as well as the printed physical book is about Angelo Custos, who gives up his position as a general in the angelic military to become Jesus Christ’s guardian angel, and his struggles to protect Jesus from the forces of evil throughout Jesus’s life from birth to His forty day fast in the Wilderness.
